Propping / Needling

Propping & Needling Design

Openings, alterations and demolition supported properly — engineered load paths from the structure above down to ground that can carry them.

What this covers

Cutting a new opening or taking out structure means the loads have to go somewhere — deliberately. We design propping and needling schemes that trace the load path from the supported element to the ground: props, needles, spreader arrangements, foundations and the sequence that keeps everything stable at every stage.

  • Needle beams through walls for new openings
  • Vertical propping to floors, slabs and beams
  • Flying and raking shores for temporary stability
  • Back-propping through multiple levels
  • Prop foundation and spreader design
  • Installation, transfer and strike sequence

How we word it

  • Loads are assessed from available drawings and stated assumptions — intrusive verification may be required.
  • Coordination with the permanent works designer is expected for structural alterations.
  • Subject to competent checking under the project temporary works procedure.

Typical deliverables

  • Propping/needling calculations and arrangement drawings
  • Load assessment of the supported structure (stated basis)
  • Sequence for install, load transfer and removal
  • Permit-to-load / strike interface and inspection points

Information we need for an accurate quote

Partial information is fine to start — we will tell you what matters most.

  • What is being supported and what is being removed/altered
  • Existing drawings or survey information (photos help)
  • Construction of the supported element (materials, spans, storeys over)
  • Proposed sequence and programme
  • Permanent works designer involvement status
  • Space constraints for props and foundations

Typical hold points & interfaces

  • Props/needles installed and inspected before cutting or demolition
  • Load transfer confirmed (permit-to-load) before removal of structure
  • Strike only on permit after permanent works achieve capacity

When contractors use this

  • A structural opening is being formed in a load-bearing wall
  • Demolition or alteration needs temporary stability
  • Floors must carry plant or materials beyond their design load
  • The permanent works designer requires an engineered scheme
